The Nanyang Girls’ High School Guzheng Ensemble became independent from the school’s Chinese Orchestra in 2004. To date, it comprises 50 members. Directed by renowned Guzheng specialist, Miss Lim Choo Li, with the assistance of Miss Wang Kena.
The ensemble has consistently showcase outstanding performances at the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation, having achieved the highest awards attainable for SYF since its inception (Gold with Honours from 2005 to 2013 and Distinction from 2015 to 2021 SYF).
The ensemble had also been invited by various organizers to partake in major performances, including a performance at the Maritime Experiential Museum and Aquarium, “Our People Our Music 2014” organized by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and the 2013 National Day Dinner performance held at Orchard Hotel. With great emphasis on performing skills and character development, all members of NYGZ receive the best learning experience.
In recent years, the ensemble has also been invited to perform at the Esplanade Concourse and the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre.
On top of that, all members have the chance to perform several pieces varying in styles, from traditional Chinese music to pop songs, in our very own school-based biennial concerts.
However, these achievements aside, the most important takeaways from these experiences would most definitely be improving our stage presence and musicality as individual Guzheng players, as well as learning how to work together in an ensemble to put up the best performance for our audience.
