Have you ever wanted to experience what it’s like to play in a string ensemble, be surrounded by like-minded people who love music, or simply have an interest in learning a new instrument? Well, Nanyang String Ensemble (NYSE) is the right Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) for you!
NYSE has approximately 65 members, whose instruments consist of the violin, viola, cello and double bass, with a few even learning the harp. Besides participating in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation, NYSE also represented Singapore at the Summa Cum Laude Music Festival in Vienna, Austria in 2018. You can also look forward to having various performance opportunities such as our biennial concerts where we sometimes collaborate with other CCAs or other schools, lunchtime concerts in school as well as at other school events. In service to the community, small chamber orchestras also perform at homes for the disabled.
The ensemble is honoured to be under the baton of Mr Lim Soon Lee since 2015. A conductor as well as a violinist and violist, Mr Lim has served as the Music Director of the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Having served on the National Arts Council Resource Panel and as an advisor for the National Music Competition from 1987 to 1997, Mr Lim has made profound contributions to the musical growth in all the organizations that he has worked for.
NYSE CCA sessions are on every Tuesday and Friday, for about three hours each session. During CCA, we either practise together as an ensemble or in sectionals. If you are picking up a new instrument, you can look forward to spending a year in our Training Ensemble (TE), where you become familiar with your instrument and ensemble playing first, before joining the Main Ensemble (ME). Our repertoire ranges from classical to pop music and themes from films, so you can be certain to find something you enjoy!
Our conductor, instructors, teachers-in-charge and CCA members are all very welcoming. We would certainly love to have you as a part of our NYSE family.
DSA
We welcome students who enjoy making music in an ensemble, have a strong passion in and play the following instruments to apply through the Direct School Admission (DSA) exercise with us:
- Violin
- Viola
- Cello
- Double Bass
The CCA programme offers different areas of musical and personal growth. Through the different activities, students will further hone their musical as well as music leadership skills.
Besides being in the main ensemble, they will also be exposed to chamber music playing where they are given opportunities to lead in music discussion of the music itself as well as performance techniques. Together with the rest of the ensemble, they will also plan meaningful performances to reach out to a wider audience beyond the school.
We hope that through the CCA and Talent Development programmes, our students will be advocates and leaders of the arts.
