The Humanities Department offers the following subjects at various levels: Geography, History, Integrated Humanities, and Social Studies.
These are subjects that help you understand why things are the way they are and why things happen the way they do in Singapore, Southeast Asia, China, and the rest of the world today. Through these subjects, you will acquire skills that make you a better thinker, researcher, writer, and presenter. Just as importantly, these subjects will allow you to see various perspectives and thus, be more empathetic to different opinions.
For students who are talented and interested in the Humanities, we have further programmes that will develop your passion in the subjects, where lessons often extend to outside of the classroom, when we go on field trips, and engage with speakers with a wide range of expert knowledge. Furthermore, at the Upper Secondary level, selected students can be a part of the Humanities Programme, where they get to pursue the Humanities subjects at a higher level. Outside of the classroom, students also get to participate in other Humanities-based programmes. Some examples include letting you examine arguments for and against conservation, designing and investigating a topic of your own interest under the mentorship of academic, or getting hands-on exposure to our governance process.
Both within and outside of the classroom, the Humanities Department will be a critical part of nurturing you into becoming a “respected member of society and agent of change”, as every Nanyang girl will be.
